CASE STUDY B

B was referred to the ADAPT project by Salford Probation Service after serving a custodial sentence relating to drugs misuse.

On the first meeting it was clear to his Salford Foundation mentor that he was motivated and focused on changing his life. He told his mentor that he had been in care from a young age and never had any stability of support networks. This was further complicated by the loss of his mother early on in his life and more recently his father shortly before. In his words, B said, “I messed up big time”.

B had been released two months earlier and was living in shared accommodation and reluctantly claiming benefits. His confidence was low as he did not think he would get a second chance and shake off the stigma of being a young offender. He was also surrounded by negative peers who often provided him with ‘opportunities’ which so far he had declined. With the help of his Probation Officer he had identified a customer service position and had passed an initial telephone interview and invited to a formal interview.

His mentor enrolled him on the ADAPT Job Skills Workshop, addressing CV building, face-to-face interviews, professionalism and personal presentation. More importantly, it instilled in B to be proud of who he was and believe in himself; then others would too. His mentor helped in purchasing interview clothes and made travel arrangements. B was successful and secured a full time position to start on the 30/04/12.

B is grateful for the support he has received and liked the fact that “I was not put under pressure; they listened to me......and did what they said every time.”

B is excited and sees this as the new start that he never thought he would get. His confidence and self-esteem has been boosted and has plans of moving into his own flat once he is financially stable. His mentor is currently helping him with his housing issues and will continue to support him while he settles into his new job.
